Organic Manifesto: Why should you go organic? And - Book giveaway!

As a fitness buff, I can definitely attest to the fact that organic eating will definitely increase performance.

I`ve been sold for awhile!

You're getting a copy of the Organic Manifesto from Rodale Publishing!

I've been thinking: Organic food's been getting a bad rap lately.  Since a 2009 study pronounced that organic food was no more "healthy" than non-organic food, many people have wondered why they'd spend the extra money.  I had a big problem with that study, because it totally missed the point of why people buy organic in the first place. If you're wondering why we do, then there's a great new book for you to read:  Organic Manifesto: How Organic Farming Can Heal Our Planet, Feed the World, and Keep Us Safe

Written by Maria Rodale, founder of Rodale Publishing, the book is described as eye-opening, spectacular, and passionate.  Organic Manifesto explains in detail exactly what organic food means for us and for the planet. From the website:

Rodale was founded on the belief that organic gardening is the key to better health both for us and for the planet, and never has this message been more urgent. Now Maria Rodale, CEO and Chairman of Rodale Inc., sheds new light on the state of 21st-century farming. She examines the unholy alliances that have formed between the chemical companies that produce fertilizer and genetically altered seeds, the agricultural educational system that is virtually subsidized by those same companies, and the government agencies in thrall to powerful lobbyists, all of which perpetuate dangerous farming practices and deliberate misconceptions about organic farming and foods. Interviews with government officials, doctors, scientists, and farmers from coast to coast bolster her position that chemical-free farming may be the single most effective tool we have to protect our environment and, even more important, our health.

If you're considering going organic - or perhaps more importantly, if you're not - this book is a must-read.  Organic Manifesto: How Organic Farming Can Heal Our Planet, Feed the World, and Keep Us Safe is available at Amazon, Chapters and other retailers.

And - I have a copy to give away compliments of Rodale! Simply comment on this post detailing what your reasons are for learning more about going Organic by Friday, April 30th. Make sure you leave me a way to contact you. I'll draw a name at random and contact you directly. Good luck!

I am trying to be healthier in my choices of products, for me and for the environment, and that, to me, includes food choices. I already believe that organic is good for me (no fertilizers and such), and good for the chicken (meat produced in better condition), but convincing my better half is another issue (he only seems to see the cha-ching organic comes along with). So this book could be a good way to convince him! And in the meantime : grocery shopping alone =)

I grew up on Vancouver Island, which has always been ahead of time in terms of organic living, recycling, composting, etc. Now that I live in a large city, it is more challenging to live an organic lifestyle.

This book would be a great inspiration to get back into a more organic life.

My husband and I now eat vegetarian in addition to trying to eat/buy as much organic as possible. We both feel much healthier for it!

Food is meant to promote life. I don't want to put food that is coated with poison inside my body.

My husband & I just welcomed the addition of our son to our family seven weeks ago. While I occasionally bought organic (some of the "dirty dozen") before, I find myself with an overwhelming urge to leave my son a world that's a little bit better (or, at least, for a change, not worse!) than the one we grew up in. When we live in a world with Round-Up resistant crops, developed because of such an ongoing buildup in our soils, something needs to change.

Going organic is for my and my family's health, as well as the earth's. With all the mixed messages coming from the media, it's good to be able to read up on the matter.

There so much controversy about going organic these days, with the anti-organic movement creating doubt with comments like 'there's no difference in taste', and 'conventional produce is just as healthy as organic', etc. It would be nice to have a clear picture of what organic is and why we should switch. Personally I think any level of pesticide and contaminents is dangerous and that there's no such thing as an 'acceptable level'.

For me, it's pretty simple: My kid. I eat organic because I want to live as long as possible, to be here for her and watch her grow up. Also, I cook organic because I want her to have a long, happy life, and enjoy the best of what the earth has to offer. Corny, I know, but it's true.

I am always struggling to make healthier choices and sometimes it's hard to decide how to make the most of your dollar. Although I already buy some of my food organic, I feel as if this book could provide me with some inspiration to continue along the 'organic path'.

I've always believed that there is not much difference between going organic and going green, it is so inter-related it is not even funny. Beginning to eat organic in the last 6 months of my life has significantly increased my day to day vitality and energy has improved. I am excited to read the book.
