Readers, hold on to your seats - this giveaway rocks!

I've already talked to you about Big Green Purse, the awesome book and website that talks about how women spend (or have influence over) 85% of every dollar spent in the marketplace. That's power. And Big Green Purse tells us how we should use that power to send a message. The message is: we are only interested in buying products that are healthy, sustainable, and good for us and for the planet. Manufacturers are resistant to laws forcing them to become sustainable, but they will always listen to the power of what's selling in the marketplace, and it is with our Big Green Purses that we will tell them exactly what kind of products we will - and won't - spend our money on.

The book is hefty (excellent for chucking at the heads of eco-jerks), printed on 100% recycled paper, and is chock filled with tips on how to spend your money greenily and wisely. This book is an excellent resource for anyone who is looking to change their lifestyle and their spending. You'll learn:

• how to become a savvy green consumer — or not consume at all
• twenty-five key commodity areas where your dollars can have the biggest environmental impact
• standards you can use to choose the greenest option, no matter what you buy
• how to prioritize your green spending, clarifying what’s worth the premium price some green products cost, and what isn’t
• specific companies in each category you can support (and some you should avoid).

So here's the best part: ecochick has five (that's right, 5) copies to give away to readers. Simply comment on this post by Friday, May 30th, telling me one of the Green Shopping Principles found on the Big Green Purse website. They're easy to find, trust me!

I'll post the names of the book recipients on this post after May 30th, so don't forget to check back after that date to see if your name is posted - I'll need you to email me with your mailing address.

Sounds very interesting!

The green shopping principle I chose is #5 - Choose fewer ingredients.

Picking products with less packaging is something I really try to do whenever I can. Not only is it less stuff in the landfill, it's less hassle for me too!

oooh count me in for this giveaway please! I'd love to read it and pass it along when I'm done.

That sounds like a great book!

I choose #6:
Pick less packaging.

Me, me!

Buy local. Avoid the higher energy costs involved in transporting goods long distances. Supporting local farmers and businesses also increases the likelihood that U.S. environmental and health laws and regulations will be followed.

I'm a fan of #7 - Buy Local. I love me a good farmer's market. :)

Please give me a book! :)

my favorites are numbers 6 and 7.

a great place to help with number 7 is www.localharvest.com

hooray for farmers markets and bringing your own grocery bag (and good books)! :)

I've been working on numbers 1 and 6: Buy less and pick less packaging. I'm hoping to hit the farmer's market near work too.

I'm a huge fan of buying local produce, food and clothing.

I like the simplicity of #1: Buy less. But if I need one that hasn't been mentioned already, I'll go with #4: Look for third-party verification.

Buy Local - with the great markets around this summer, it shouldn't be too hard! The book sounds interesting!

I choose: Buy local. I'm already doing it and I usually walk to local markets and stores as well - and of course, bring my own bags.

Cool giveaway! I'll have to track down this book - if I don't win one, of course ;)

As for a Green Shopping Principle: here's one I already practice: Choose fewer ingredients.

This book looks really cool. I think it would be a great follow up for my Media Studies class. It will be interesting to see how manufacturers change their products and marketing tactics in the upcoming years.

I like #6- pick less packaging. I always bring my reusable bags with me while I'm grocery shopping.

Buy local!

I am a trying my best to do #1 - Buy less, as well as #2 - Read the label. I went to get some hand soap yesterday and left sans soap, as all the ones they carried had yucky stuff in them.

Buy local... best thing anyone can do! I'm trying.

7) Buy local.

On that note, the Main Street market is now open on Saturdays (on Main St in the St. Paul University parking lot). Same with the Ottawa Farmer's Market at Lansdowne Park on Sundays. I'm heading there this weekend to stock up.

Oh, and we're eating more vegetarian meals now which falls under #3 supporting sustainable standards.

One of my favourites.

This book looks fantastic! I choose #6- buy local! (although I try to buy local and organic as often as I can) I also read more than labels, but the ingredient list... hehe i am such a nerd. I've read Ecoholic and am now ready for the next Eco-book! :)

I do first try to buy less and then try to buy local... so I guess I'm another vote for #1 and #7.

I have been trying to choose fewer ingredients. I try to pay more attention to what is put into the products I buy, especially for my children.
